Results

In case anyone was interested in reviewing how things went, I just uploaded the results to the Yahoo group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LbGLK/files/Clues%20and%20More%20Clues.../BNL%20BaliGrl/

We had one small math error in our calculations which caused the 6th & 7th place spots to switch places from the results we announced last night. But, no big deal!

Interestingly enough, to me anyway.... I went through all these calculations to get a time credit based on which box people started from, and it made absolutely no difference whatsoever in the final calculations of placements. Weird! I figured there was such a big difference in the total driving distances that it would be blantantly unfair to start at certain places without the time credits.

Whew!

Well, that was fun! I think the Creepy Crawl seemed like it went off without a hitch! I didn't hear any stories of anyone getting arrested, or hassled or lost! No one complained that I got any directions wrong in my clues! No one got stung by the Wasp Woman or bitten by the Wolfman! I guess the only major fubar on our part was that Wisconsin Hiker and Martini Man beat us back to the final resting spot! Oops. So much for trying to grab some lunch! Lots of people finished the crawl a lot sooner than I thought. I figured it would take 3 1/2 to 4 hours... Spartan Fans finished in just under 3 hours! Whew!

I hope everyone had a good time! It was fun for me! I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to talk to people too much at the after party. I was running around doing a million things and by the time I was ready to chill out, everyone left!

I want to thank everyone for participating, and especially for contributing additional food, ice, plates, cups, napkins, etc! I appreciate the help with everything! (I especially appreciate that I ended up with the left over revel bars! Woohoo! Who'da thought there'd be leftovers of those!!! Yum!)

I forgot to ask... did anyone get my lame "What could be better than this?" joke at Rural Hill?

I took some pictures, I managed to miss Digus, Lunagirl & papa, PopoBullyGirl, Mr. DoubleDragon and me! So, if anyone has any pictures they'd like to share, please pass them along. Here's a gallery, if anyone wants to view or order some photos of the event. share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=8CbtnDdo4bP6A

Thanks for coming to the Creepy Crawl!

Signups Closed

Unfortunately, due to the nature of this event, we had an RSVP deadline for this event which has passed. Signups for the Crawl itself are currently closed. If you would like to come to the "after party", you're more than welcome. Although, I can't tell you where it is until the day of the event since it's something the participants have to figure out along the way. If you want to email me with your phone number, I can call you on the day of the event with the location information: bnlbaligrl@sbcglobal.net

Advice from an old wise one

When I was a kid, the one solid piece of advice I remember my mom giving me was "Beware the Ides of March". Well, of course, being a know it all 14 year old, I didn't listen and I fractured my elbow on March 15, the Ides. (PoPoBullyGirl still laughs at me for this event!)

But, in the end, as good of advice as that may be, it didn't do me or Julius Caesar much good. And it won't do the average Creepy Crawler much good, either, since the Crawl is in October, not March and it's no where near the Ides of any month.

So, I've been thinking, what wise words should I impart to you, the unsuspecting Crawlers? I thinked and I thanked and I thunked and I really came up blank! Then, in my travels around today to your various destinations I ran across a wise old ground hog and he said to me these words... "Beware the Holes of Moles"!

Brilliant! What better advice can I give you?!

This sage wisdom will save you from much heartache and many twisted ankles! So, now I say them to you..."Beware the Holes of Moles, my friends, Beware the Holes of Moles!

Rule updates

I have made some minor tweaks, clarifications and updates to the rules. Nothing really major changed, but you may want to re-read the rules post at the bottom of this page, as well as the "vitals" and "things to bring" lists over to the right.

Final Destination

Our original plan was to meet at a restaurant after the event, but that's not working out as we thought it would. So, I've acquired a different type of location for the "after party". We plan to order pizzas and salads after the hunt is complete, probably eating about 6pm. It should be about $5 per adult, and $2 for kids 5-12. Kids under 5 just have to be cute to eat for free! LOL ;-)

There is no "closing time", so we can hang out, BS, do exchanges, etc. for as long as anyone wants to stay.

There will be some non-alcoholic beverages (pop, water and coffee) there. If you to drink anything unusual or alcoholic, you're more than welcome to bring it with you. (Although, if you're imbibing alcohol, please make sure you have a designated driver!)

Unless your kids are really into the exchanges and that kind of thing, the final destination place will be fairly boring as there will be no other type of entertainment there for them. There is an small enclosed outside area that is available if you'd like to bring toys, balls, etc. Or, you may want to bring some "inside type" entertainment for them to keep occupied.

There will be a shortage of seating, so if you have a couple folding chairs, please bring them.

It's absolutely not necessary, but if anyone would like to make a contribution, we could use:
Ice
cups
plates
plastic forks/knives
napkins

If you would like to bring something, please add a comment to this post. Thanks!

Answer Sheet

Once you figure out the place names, you will want to write each name down with the corresponding box number. A helpful "answer" sheet which can be found here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LbGLK/files/Clues%20and%20More%20Clues.../BNL%20BaliGrl/

Again, you don't need to find these places on a map ahead of time. (It may be helpful to do so, but it's not necessary.) We will provide an overview map showing approximate locations of each one.

Bring this answer sheet with you!

Need info on team members

When you sign up for the event, please email me at BNLBaliGrl@sbcglobal.net to let me know the breakdown of the # of adults, # of kids and the ages of the kids.
Thanks!

New Revised Rules...

Things are coming along! We will have the clues for the destinations shortly.

I just wanted to point out a couple of rule changes/clarifications. This information has been revised in the rules posting below, but here are the highlights:

HH's are okay to leave, but once found... please do not move to another box within the series.

Team members must travel in one car together. You cannot split up your team and go to different boxes.

All team member's drivers licenses will be sealed in an envelope at the start of the Crawl. If the envelope is opened before you check-in, a 5 minute penalty will be levied.

The "kid" rule has been revised. Kids 8 and over will be counted as a team-mate. Kids 7 and under are welcome and will not count as team members. Teams can have a max 4 members. However, please keep your total group size down to 6 or fewer people including the youngsters.

Creepy Crawl Rules

Clues for the 8 locations will be provided at least one month prior to the event date. Participants must figure out the names of each placement site prior to the event. You do not need to determine where each place is located, just the names. Don’t skip this step; it’s vital to success.

Must check in between 10-11am at Rotary Park in order to participate in the hunt and receive your clue packets.

One clue packet will be provided for each team. Clue packets will include: Overview map of the locations, clues for each of the 8 boxes, clues to determine final resting spot. Wayne & Oakland County street maps are highly recommended and up to you to provide.

Teams can consist of 1-4 people; children 7 and under will not count as team members. (Large groups of people may be overly conspicuous at the box locations, so please keep the total number of people in your group under 6, including the younger kids.)

BaliGrl &DoubleDragon will assign the starting box and/or time for each team. Your team will decide how to proceed from the initial box. (Although the boxes are numbered 1-8, this does not necessarily mean it's best to find them in that order.)

We figured out the “average round-trip mileage” for each starting box. Average mileages range from 42-57 miles. In order to equalize the starting positions, a time adjustment of 1 minute per excess mile will be given based on the average distance of each starting box. For example, no adjustment is made to the 42-mile box, a 3-minute credit is given to the 45-mile box, a 15-minute credit is given to the 57-mile box, etc.

Although you can get to Rotary Park early and assemble your team on the day of the event, the clue packets will not be handed out until the team is assembled and ready to start. If you would like to put together a team, feel free to post requests in the comments section to this post, or use the AQ email system to contact other people who have RSVP'd.

Each team will search for 8 hidden boxes and the final destination. Hopefully, you figured out the “place names” ahead of time as instructed. Teams will have to match the place names with the appropriate box clues at the start of the hunt.

In addition to finding the 8 hidden boxes, while on the hunt, your team must solve the clues along the way in order to figure out the location of the final resting point. These clues will be provided in your packet at the start of the race.

If you are working as a team, it is obviously okay to help each other out with the clues, box finding, etc. But, please do not join forces with or help out other teams along the way.

All team members must travel in one car and cannot “split” the boxes with parts of the teams going separate places.

If your team gets lost during the hunt or needs help, you may call for a hint. A 5-minute penalty will be levied for each request. Contact BNL BaliGrl: (# to be provided on day of event)

The usual letterboxing “rules” apply… especially being discreet and respectful of the locations. Repack and rehide the boxes well.

Yeah, okay, it’s a race… but no speeding allowed! Obey all traffic laws. Driver’s licenses of all team members will be placed in a sealed envelope at the start of the event (you take the envelope with you). If that envelope is opened when you check in at the end, there will be a 5-minute penalty levied.

Hitchhikers: It is okay to leave hitchhikers in the boxes. Remember as the “Leaver”, you must stamp the HH stamp into the box log and the box stamp into the HH log. As a “finder”, please take the HH’s with you to release at a later date. Do not move the HH to another box within this series.

There many other great boxes in this area. We suggest that you do not look for them during this event, but if you do, it’s up to you to provide the clues. And, remember, the clock is running!

Sorry, all dogs and other non-humans should be left at home for this event.

All teams must check into the final destination by 4pm. If it gets to be 3:30-3:45 and you are not done with the hunt, you should stop looking and head to the final location.

If you are unable to figure out where we are meeting, contact BNL BaliGrl for the location and directions. A 10-minute penalty will be levied to any team requesting this information.

Bali and DD will record the official start and finish times, and any time credits and penalties, for each team.

Upon check-in at the final destination, teams must present proof of finding all 8 boxes and show their solution to the final destination clues.

The team that finds all 8 boxes, figures out the final destination, and checks in with the shortest length of time (after any time credits are given and time penalties are levied) will be declared the winner.

In the event of a tie, the tying teams will compete in a special tie-breaker challenge!

In the highly unlikely event that no team is able to find all 8 boxes and solve the final destination clues by the check-in time, the team that made the most progress in the shortest time frame will win.

Creepy Crawl

DoubleDragon and I are hosting a fall mini-event this October. The event will be a letterboxing version of a "Road Rally" or "Scavenger Hunt". We will be planting several boxes in the surrounding area for this event. Clues to the boxes and an overview map of the locations will be provided on the day of the event. If you're not familiar with Northern Wayne County & Southern Oakland County, you'll probably benefit by bringing good street maps of the area with you. It will be up to you to determine where each box is planted, puzzles will be provided to participants several weeks before the actual event. It will also be up to you to figure out where we will be meeting after the hunt is done. (Although, you're welcome to call me to surrender if you run out of time or patience.) I'm sure there will be plenty of eating, exchanging and BSing after the hunt.

Please RSVP by 10/1/2007, check out Atlas Quest to sign up http://www.atlasquest.com/events/event.html?gEventId=449.

We hope to see you there! If you have any questions, please leave a comment here or send me an email through AQ.

Thanks!
